About Us
Our Mission
National Community Notification Information and Education Services, Inc, (NCNIES) is committed to providing law enforcement, corrections, treatment providers and other stakeholders in the sex offender management process, with the knowledge, skills, and training necessary to effectively manage sex offenders in the community. Further, we are committed to educating the general public on sex offender issues, so that informed decisions may be made on personal, family, and community safety.
What We Believe
National Community Notification Information and Education Services, Inc, (NCNIES) believes that sex offenders should be held accountable for their actions. We also believe that citizens have a right to know when a moderate to high risk sex offender is living in their neighborhood. Fair, responsible, and non-inflammatory community notification is a reasonable consequence to the acts of the offender; furthermore, it allows citizens to take prudent and rational steps to protect themselves, their children, and their community from sex offenders.
We believe the key component of effective community notification is community education. Community education meetings provide a forum for law enforcement to educate the community regarding sex offenders in general; to separate fact from myth; to emphasize the community’s vested interest in the offender’s success; to create partnerships between law enforcement, business and residents; and to help the community understand that sex offenders have always lived in our neighborhoods. We believe that effective community notification is "community policing" at its best.
We believe that effective community notification is and should be just one more component of society’s commitment to reduce sexual abuse. Sex offenders differ greatly in their level of impulsiveness, persistence, risk to the community, and their desire to change their deviant behavior. We strongly support the therapeutic treatment of sex offenders by clinicians specialized in treating this diverse population. When coupled with intensive probation, supervision and monitoring, treatment plays an integral and effective role in preventing future sex offenses.
